Online School – You Do Not Have To Settle For A GED!

22 Jul

Students drop out of high school for many reasons; perhaps they need to work to support themselves, or their family structure may not have been conducive to the educational process. Many students who for one reason or another do not complete high school do, however, complete their GED (General Education) certificate. This is a high school equivalency test that tests students in five subjects: language arts, mathematics, writing, science, and social studies. The majority of students who do go on to complete their GED report that they have done so in order to continue their post secondary education.

In the past, GED students were expected to join the work force once they completed their certificate, and that would have been the end of it. Most colleges did not seek or accept GED students as viable candidates for college. However, most colleges not only accept, but welcome GED students as applicants, because it is now widely recognized that non-traditional students are ready to continue on with their post secondary education.

There are other new advances which have opened the doors for GED students to get their degrees. The advent of online schools has created a wealth of opportunities for GED students to attain an online degree or certification in a particular job track. Online college now offers degree programs at several levels to students who want to improve their job prospects and their lives.

Usually, these students have to get their GEDs because they have to work. Full-time employment doesn’t leave a lot of room for other activities, like attending classes on the campus of a regular college. An online degree program can remove the scheduling hassles for people who work full-time. After their working hours, they can focus on their online degree program at their convenience.

A student who works full time may not be interested in pursuing an online degree that focuses on academic work. They might rather focus on a program that will train them for a particular job in a specific field. These types of degrees are called technical degrees, and online colleges have a large number of these types of degrees to choose from.

In addition to technical degrees, online schools also offer degrees at several levels. Online schools offer a two year degree program, called an associate degree. An associate degree can be technical, academic, or professional. Once a student attains an associate degree, they can move forward and work toward completing a bachelor degree in a number of fields. Online colleges not only offer bachelor degrees, but masters and PhDs in many fields.

Many distance colleges offer four year degrees in nearly every career field available. From business to criminal justice, law or education, an online degree can be the pathway for students to attain higher earning potential and greater job satisfaction. Also, there may be many instances in which a working student who is attending online college can apply what they are learning to their present job. This may lead to recognition by employers and the possibility of promotion or pay raises.

In years past, a GED student may have been relegated to working in a job that didn’t have much chance for advancement. Today, however, online college officials are eager to help these and other students move on in their post secondary education. A degree in a technical, academic, or professional field from the many accredited online universities may be the best way for a working student to advance. Learn more about online classes and you’ll see how easy it is to advance your career success!

Money For College Can Be The Answer To Imporving Your Career!

13 Jan

Scholarship money can help take the sting out of online college tuition costs, and students don’t necessarily have to be on the honor roll or win a pageant to obtain them. A wide variety of scholarships are available and a little research into those for which students might qualify could result in a good amount of tuition assistance. The best online degree is the one that leaves you prepared for the next step, be it work or additional schooling.

Scholarship money typically doesn’t have to be repaid. It can be found in and outside of colleges and universities that award this assistance to help pay for on campus and online degree programs they offer.

In some instances, students might very well find scholarships for online degree programs within their own communities. Churches, synagogues, community groups and civic organizations are known to award scholarships to students who reside within specific regions. Students seeking out local scholarships for online college offerings might consider groups such as Kiwanis, Rotary International, the Lion’s Club and local chambers of commerce. They might award scholarships based on demographics, academic achievements, community services, financial need or a combination of factors such as these.

Students intending to pursue specific studies as part of their online college endeavors can also find local scholarships that encourage those studies. The Rotary Club of Plainfield and North Plainfield, NJ, offers several scholarships, including one designed in part for higher education studies in engineering. Some suggest that students with degrees in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects can help fill a demand for qualified workers. Students with college studies and career goals related to art, poetry, journalism and writing might also benefit from this particular Rotary scholarship.

Students don’t have to be high school graduates to be eligible for scholarships. When it comes to nursing, online college programs are pretty plentiful, Hispanic representation in the field is said to be limited, and some have forecasted a rising nursing shortage as baby boomers age. Nursing and health occupation students in their senior year at a specific Texas school can apply for a scholarship of up to $2,000 from the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in El Paso. Underrepresented minority groups in and out of the nursing and health care professions can also find scholarships through organizations such as the Tucson and Greater Austin Hispanic chambers of commerce and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

Students might not think to look toward large companies such as Wal-Mart, which have a presence in many local communities. But these and other corporate giants offer tuition assistance, and information about their scholarships can be obtained on the Internet.

Outside of the local community, students with Internet access can also look for non-profit organizations and industry associations that offer scholarships, as well as fellowships that might be available in exchange for fieldwork. The federal government offers work study participation, in addition to Pell grants that have recently been expanded. These grants are provided on the basis of financial needs and, like scholarships, they typically don’t have to be repaid.

After any college grants and scholarships or work study offerings are considered, students might consider loans to help pay tuition. The federal government offers low-interest student loans that typically don’t require credit checks or collateral and that don’t have to be repaid until after graduation. A bit of searching for the aid for your degree programs online will uncover resources, Pell grants and more, that can assist your college experience. If you are looking for more information about online scholarships, check the internet.

Going Back To School For College Degrees Online May Be A Great Idea For Teachers!

04 Jan

Current and prospective teachers who choose to further their education by enrolling in campus-based or online colleges could obtain the skills they will need to improve the performance of their students and receive pay raises. Online college courses toward an accredited degree can be completed after a teacher’s regular workday, so as not to compromise the schedule of the teacher.

In an effort to improve the American education system, President Obama has announced several initiatives that are intended to increase the quality of learning at public schools. Education is extremely important for future generations, and the government is taking the time and resources to develop programs that will benefit students in the long term.

Students and teachers are being offered incentives, such as additional funding for their learning institution, in order to improve their learning situation. These initiatives will help everyone get the education they desire. By offering additional funding, everyone involved is being motivated to contribute to the cause, and give it their best.

Part of this program will reward teachers based on their students’ performance on standardized tests. Teachers who are able to inspire their pupils and enable them to do well on these examinations will be eligible for pay raises. These educators will also receive in-depth reviews by administrators before they are awarded higher salaries. This will ensure that teachers are retaining the knowledge they learn during their course studies.

When you further your education in an online degree program, you are able to complete coursework at the time that suits you best. If you’re a teacher, and you are at school during the day, you can work on furthering your degree in the evening or at night. Teachers who take the initiative to increase their education will have sharper skills and more recent knowledge of how to best educate and motivate their students.

Students and teachers have other things in common, too. Teachers who are working toward a degree can relate to their students. They are both working on homework assignments and quizzes, and have to balance other responsibilities along with their education. Teachers will be able to encourage their students to be driven and determined.

By striving to improve themselves, and applying what they learn in their degree work, teachers are showing they want to achieve greatness in their personal and professional lives. They want to work on developing their place of employment, to be a better place for students to learn and become more well-rounded individuals. They can also work on honing the skills that not only make them more employable for future jobs in their industry, but that will also make them a valuable member of their team.

As schools across the country vie for federal grants, teachers who have stayed up-to-date with educational trends, and who have the skills to motivate their students, will be in high demand. Additionally, educators who have stuck with their employers through times of hardship and earned their online degrees may be more likely to benefit from government funding, which could help them pay for tuition at a campus-based or their distance learning PhD. Those moving into the education field after obtaining an associates degree will find nearly the same incentives to earn further accreditation. If you’re are interested in getting more information about your distance learning degree, check the internet.

Make Reaching Your College Degree Less Stressful With The Help Of Scholarships And Grants!

01 Jan

When a student starts considering going to college, usually the next thing they think about is how to finance it. Yes, they have heard of, and most likely applied for, the Pell Grant. It cuts cost considerably, either for on campus or online degrees. At the same time, even though President Obama pushed through a raise on the Pell, it’s only good for so much, and most schools tuitions far exceed that amount alone.

There’s another federal grant, one that’s been around longer than even the Pell.  The Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) has been in effect since the mid 1960′s.  It gives an applicant as much as a supplemental $4,000. In fact, last year over $700 million grants were handed out to deserving students, making it second only to the Pell in grants issued.

To apply for the SEOG, one must fill out the FASFA form just like the Pell. The same document can be used for both programs. As is probably known, the FASFA will ask about such things as both the student’s and the parent’s financial status, their expenses, and such things as what their education will probably cost. This is especially relevant to the SEOG, as it considers outside grants, and by that we aren’t just talking the Pell, but from elsewhere.

Where things start to differentiate the Pell from the SEOG starts now. The SEOG applicant must meet some additional factors.  For starters, U.S. citizenship is mandatory. Next, that what the Pell Grant hands out still doesn’t meet basic school costs. It should also be noted that the SEOG are only for Associate’s or Bachelor’s degrees. Another thing is the applicant has to have acceptable grades both before and during their college years.

If the student somehow manages to be overpaid by the Pell, then he/she automatically loses the SEOG. On the other hand, if a student drops out for a time, he can still get SEOG money if deciding to go back. Another way to lose the SEOG is, after dropping out, the student winds up in default of any college loans they may have had.

Another thing is the money never goes directly to the student. Instead, the college sets up an account where the check is deposited. Where it gets fancy is when a term (whether it’s a semester or trimester) starts, the Board of Education issues a check through the college. Upon receipt, the applicant goes to the school’s bursar office and signs over the check. It is deposited to the account and provides the tuition payment in this manner.

One important tip about all this is it’s a good idea to do all this with the assistance of a financial aid officer. They can help a student navigate through the maze of paperwork and bylaws, making it easier to obtain the desired money. It’s their job after all.

What’s important is when the Pell Grant doesn’t meet your educational needs; there is another grant program that can be an incredible supplement towards obtaining on campus or online diploma.  Of course, just because the SEOG is there with the grants for college doesn’t mean one shouldn’t look for more. They are out there if you look for them. For more information about free scholarships and grants, check the internet.

Online Colleges Providing Apply For A Pell Grant Online For Students

28 Dec

Grants can take some of the pressure off paying online college tuition as a student works toward their degree. These forms of tuition assistance are available to adults, as well as high school graduates, and they typically don’t have to be repaid.  Not everyone knows how or where to look for them, however, and this lack of information can be costly.

Scholarships and fellowships are similar to grants, with fellowships often requiring fieldwork as a part of their conditions.  Scholarships are often awarded by colleges and universities to students who study at their institutions.  Students can find non-school specific financial aid offerings available through government agencies, corporate giants, non-profit organizations and special interest and civic groups. Many of these offerings might be applied to online college classes and online degree and certificate programs, particularly when online colleges, universities and vocational schools are accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency.  This is an important factor which should never be overlooked.

Minimum grade point average, financial need, leadership, specific studies or a combination of factors, including whether students are women or minorities – all or some are determining factors for scholarships, fellowships and grants for college.  The following information might help take some of the time and stress out of searching for online college grants, scholarships and fellowships:

Go Local: Students might not have to look much farther than their own backyards, since some local groups extend scholarships to members and those within a specific region. Churches, synagogues, community groups and civic organizations such as Kiwanis, the Lion’s Club, Rotary International and chambers of commerce might be among them.

Think Big:  Companies such as Wal-Mart, AT&T, McDonald’s, Tylenol and State Farm have been known to offer scholarships and fellowships for students from the high school graduate to doctorate level. Wal-Mart targets high school students with minimum grade point averages. AT&T maintains a fellowship program that covers the cost of tuition, books, fees and more for minorities and women pursuing doctorate degrees in computing and communications.

Consider Yourself and Your Goals: Some organizations offer scholarships and fellowships based on fields of study or specific demographics. Groups such as the National Science Foundation, the Hispanic College Fund, the United Negro College Fund and the American Association of University Women are among them. And organizations such as the non-profit Raise the Nation tailor scholarships to single mothers.

Set A Foundation: Charitable foundations offer a variety of scholarships, fellowships and grants for college. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation provides scholarships to first-time, full-time degree-seekers, and the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation provides scholarships to high school graduates who have participated in an approved college readiness program. The Jack Kent Cook Foundation provides undergraduate transfer scholarships for community college students so that they can work toward their bachelor degrees; and the Ford Foundation provides fellowships that serve minorities and those with disabilities, as well as those working at the graduate level to become a professor at a United States college or university.

One-Stop Shop: The government offers work study programs and grants that are often based on financial needs. Students seeking government assistance for qualifying online degree programs can determine their eligibility by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid online. The results might include low-interest loans that don’t require credit checks and collateral and don’t have to be repaid until after graduation.  Students might consider loans after other forms of assistance are deducted from the overall cost of tuition.

Online college is a great way to take the classes you need to get the accredited degree that will help you throughout your working years. With the availability of college grants and scholarships and online degree grant, there is no reason to think there isn’t some area of eligibility you will meet.

21 Dec

Each year thousands of college students choose to avoid the lecture hall and instead take advantage of the convenience of logging on to their computer to attend class. Online college courses are growing in popularity. Students love these courses and they want colleges and universities to offer more programs. Now distance learning college is not just for undergraduate students, many institutions also have graduate and masters programs online and these programs are getting rave reviews.

More than a quarter of all college students now take at least one course this way. In the fall of 2008, an amazing 4.6 million students were studying online, a 17 percent increase from the year before. And these students want more options! A study by the Sloan Consortium found students want colleges and universities to offer more classes online. The study found students at 73% of institutions were demanding an increase in distance classes.

Why is online learning so popular? Online courses are more convenient that traditional college courses. There’s no need to walk or drive to campus for class at a particular time. You can attend class from the comfort of your own home, whenever it fits your schedule. This flexibility means students can attend college and work full time or take care of a young family. Even members of the military are finding they can attend college this way while serving on active duty.

Because undergraduate online programs have been so successful, more college and universities are now also offering graduate and masters programs online. The Department of Education recognizes over 1,300 online masters programs and 320 doctoral programs. The same flexibility applies to these courses. Graduate students can download lectures, complete assignments and take exams on the Internet at a time that fits their schedule.

The Sloan Consortium reports 65% of all schools that offer online programs also have online graduate courses. Of these institutions, 44% also offer online masters programs. For example there are masters programs for business, nursing and education. Many of these courses have the same curriculum as the on campus counterparts and award the same type of degree. In the past, professionals who wanted to attend graduate school had to take night classes or change their work schedule.

The days of night school being the only option for working professionals who wanted to attend graduate school are gone. Online graduate courses allow working students to keep their current schedule intact and attend class when it’s convenient. Another plus, online learning may be less expensive than traditional classes. Students can take one course at a time or as many as they can handle.

Once they get their degree, online masters are going over well with employers. A study by the Sloan Consortium found an increasing number of chief executive officers and educational institutions rated online learning just as effective as or better than a traditional education.

Improve You Earning Potential By Getting Your Degree Programs Online!

15 Dec

As the economy takes its time bouncing back and people continue to look for work, many professionals are thinking about heading back to school via college distance learning classes. But not knowing what to study or what their major should be can be a stumbling block. Don’t let it.  Actually being undecided may be the best approach. Think of college as a way to figure out what you want to do with the rest of your life.

Several prospective students may worry that they will waste a great deal of time and money if they do not choose to earn a degree in a subject that will lead to a fascinating and high-paying career. In addition, some of these individuals may fear they will stunt their professional development if they choose to leave their jobs in order to pursue higher education. There are ways to test what fields interest you before you invest too much time or money.  You can even earn your degree without leaving your job.

Choosing an associate’s degree program can alleviate some of these fears. Whether you choose to get your associates degree online or on campus, these courses of study take less time and less money. Since an associate’s degree entails some of the courses required by a bachelor’s degree, it’s a great way to get your feet wet. You can find out what you’re interested in before you spend four years studying for a degree.

Associates degrees usually take two years to complete. The student takes general courses like math, science and writing. Some associates programs also give students introductory courses in a particular field.

For example, a student with an associate’s degree in technology will get a background in physics, computer drafting and programming. They will also take classes in English, math and engineering technology. If the student does not enjoy the course of study, they can choose not to continue on to get a bachelors in the field or change directions completely.

After students complete these programs, they will have a solid foundation that could enable them to choose a higher degree program in a more specialized field. In addition, these students may be able to transfer the credits they have earned to a bachelors program, which could save them time and money on their educational endeavors.

For instance, holders of an associates in general technology may wish to pursue a campus-based or online bachelors degree in alternative and renewable energy systems, industrial technology management or information technology. If an associate graduate chooses to go for a bachelor’s degree, the student can transfer their credits from their associate’s degree instead of repeating the introductory courses.

Receiving your distance degree towards your online education is a great way to test your interest in a field while boosting your education. Both of will make your resume more impressive if you are one of the millions of people currently looking for work. An associate’s degree is only two years; it’s a smaller time and financial commitment than a four year degree. However, if you decide a bachelor’s degree is the next step after your associate’s diploma, the course credits can be transferred. Going to school part time or online make sense for students who want their online bachelors. Both allow more flexibility, which means the student can maintain work or family obligations while they improve their education. If you would like to get more information about life experience degree, check on the internet.

Preparing For Accredited Degree May Include Finding Financial Aid!

06 Dec

These days it’s nearly impossible for anyone to attend college without considering some kind of financial aid and this applies to both on campus and accredited degree online programs.  In fact, one could say a prospective student shouldn’t even consider matriculation without both the grades and the financial package to back them up.

Ask the average American just what financial aid is and a lot of the time even those in college don’t have a clear idea. There are very specific differences between a scholarship and a grant, a loan or going through a work-study program. A good place to start is a school’s financial aid officer. It’s their job to help prospective students get as much aid as possible. Successful ones keep their jobs and a student directly benefits by letting them do so.

Some general information about the different types of financial aid available is a good place to start.  Understand the basics and you know what you are looking at when the time comes.

(1)  Scholarships and Fellowships – The first and best know are scholarships and fellowships. They are bestowed due to intellectual or personal merit, as they can be given out for good citizenship (aka leadership awards) as well as good grades. Scholarships are for undergraduates. Fellowships are for post-grads. These days it’s nearly impossible not to find one organization or another that doesn’t have one, if not more, out there. After being awarded one, the only thing a student usually only has to do is keep their nose clean and maintain a pre-determined grade point average.

(2)  Grants – Mainly are handed out due to financial need, although grades are a consideration. They require students and/or their parent(s) to fill out a FASFA form. This details income, expenses and any other important details. Better known grants include the Federal Pell Grant, the SEOG and the state of Georgia’s Hope Grant. Again, a student doesn’t have to pay the grant back.

(3)  Loans – At least half of all students in college has one of these. They were supposed to be a low-interest loan of one form or another. They are also based on need, so a FASFA form has to be completed. The most common loans are the Stafford, PLUS and Perkins. Thanks to the initiatives President Obama signed into law last March, college loans are going through some major modifications shortly. Just remember, these are loans, so they must be paid back.

(4)  Work-Study Programs – It helps students earn financial aid, and often academic credits, through a part-time job. They include the Federal Work Study program, whose funds can be had at 3,400 academic institutions in the U.S. Also, major corporations such as Blockbuster, McDonalds, Wal-Mart and others offer work-study programs for their employees, with beneficiaries getting as much as $10,000 a year in addition to their salaries. Like scholarships and grants, the student doesn’t pay this one back. He or she just has to work for it.

As said before, it’s a good idea to work with a financial aid officer for further advice when you want to get your on campus or online degree education. It’s also never hurts to get on the Internet and do some research on your own. Even a casual search on Google will find an incredible number of such college grants out there. For more information, the U.S. Board of Education is a great way to start. If you would like more information about online scholarships, check the internet.

Your Distance Degree Is Within Reach!

26 Nov

In today’s economy, very few individuals have extra money to waste on fruitless pursuits. Adults who are putting serious consideration into a return to school for the university degrees they need are carefully weighing their options. They know that in order to earn a college degree, they must make a serious commitment of time and finances to make an investment in higher education pay off.

You’re also a busy working professional and you have many other obligations in your life. Enrolling in a traditional campus-based education would take away from time with your family, time to work at your job, and quality time for things you enjoy in your spare time. You would spend more time away from the home, traveling to a campus and sitting in a classroom.

Online colleges understand how this works, and always create learning programs with these things in mind. You can work from home, on your own time, without having to compromise the quality of education you receive. You can keep your schedule as is, and work on classes when it is most convenient for you.

If you’re returning to school for the first time in years, and you need time to readjust to the learning experience, you will find that an online learning program is perfect for you. You will be able to spend as much or as little time as you need on any given aspect of the course, and you can take your  time doing coursework.

First time users of this online education format may do well to take their time getting more familiar with the way it works. A free online class may be the path to take, before you enroll full time in an online degree program. You will have the ability to learn the basics of this type of education and its formatics, as well as refamiliarizing yourself with the style of learning with which you are most at ease.

An online learning environment also keeps you focused on your studies, and keeps you from being distracted or feeling self-conscious. Many adults hesitate to return to school, as they’re afraid of being significantly older than their fellow students. This is not an issue in an online environment and you can concentrate on the tasks placed before you without worrying about other students.

Some distance degree programs require monthly meetings, which could help adult learners socialize and network with individuals who have similar goals. In turn, they could learn from their fellow students and regain the confidence they will need to market themselves to employers. This valuable information will allow students to take away much more than just basic knowledge when pursuing their education.

The economic downturn has led to many jobseekers wishing to update their skills, but who are wary of spending money on time-consuming and inflexible college degree offered by traditional colleges. However, these individuals can find solace in the fact that there are online programs, from associates degrees to their masters degree, that were designed with their needs in mind.  Earning your bachelor degrees from distance college is becoming easier and more popular all the time.
