31 Aug

An overview of distance learning

Distance learning is fast becoming the first choice among adults looking to go back to school. Also refered to as online learning, internet education, distance learning degrees, virtual college and e-learning, this type of education allows individuals to pursue an educational degree or certificate through a “name” university or college from the comfort of their home using a computer and internet connection.

With the rise of the internet, distance learning via mail has become a thing of the past, being replaced by the faster, more full and complete internet experience that everyone is so familiar with. It is actually a better learning experience as well.. With just a desktop, internet connection and the desire to succeed, you can earn a distance learning education degree.

Distance Learning and it’s Advantages

The main advantage of online education is the flexibility you have, especially if you are already working full time and have a full load, children or similar adult or grown up responsibilities. You can do your school work after hours or late at night, or squeeze in some course work during your lunch break at work. Having the ability to work at your own pace is a huge benefit of distance education, and one of the main reasons to rethink your goal of a higher education. Less expensive fees for online courses also makes many online colleges more affordable than traditional colleges or universites, adding another benefit to the working individual. Lastly, the option to get a degree or a certificate, such as the paralegal certifications, is yet another benefit.

Don’t Fall Into These Traps

Getting your degree online can be more difficult than you think, and requires a high level of self motivation. A great deal of people currently taking online classes say that one of the things they miss is the student to teacher and student to student interaction that typically occurs at brick and mortar schools. Learning online requires students to be able to manage their time properly, stay on task and meet your deadlines. Working on your own can be difficult for some due to the lack of interaction between the student and the teacher. This can be one of the major hurdles that you will need to overcome should you choose to engage in distance learning education.

Types of Distance Learning

When dealing with distance learning education, there are two types of classes that you can choose from. These are grouped into two groups, synchronous and asynchronous distance learning institutions. In a nutshell, the difference is that with synchronous learning, you have to attend class. There are set times for instruction, and you will need to be on your computer, attending class at these set times.? You can use a web cam, or instand messaging to communcate in real time during these class periods. Asynchronous learning, however, does not require you to attend class at set times, and gives you the freedom to view lectures or classes at any time. Your communication is not in real time, but rather via email or discussion boards. It is the asynchronous courses that truly give you the freedom that many distance learning students require.

Making a Choice

There are numerous distance learning colleges and schools that offer various classes and degree programs to meet many students needs. Once you have decided on what certificate or degree you want, you should choose an online school that fits your learning style best and has a solid reputation among the employers you are targeting once you graduate. Also, be certain to attend an accredited online school so your degree is viewed in a good light by any potential employers as well as other universities and institutions should you want to tansfer to another university.

With a good education, and a college level degree, you can improve your resume and land the job you desire in the field of your choice. Whether you are wanting to finish your masters, bachelors or doctorate degree, getting that educational degree can only improve your chances at success.
